The rumor mills have been churning at full speed the past 24 hours since Nick Woodman, CEO and Founder of GoPro, announced at CES that they would be releasing a “more casual” 360-degree video camera.

Currently, such rigs are expensive as they require multiple GoPro cameras, and splicing the footage together so that the video timelines work synchronously is labor intensive. Woodman, whose company already releases 360 videos on YouTube, said they would release “even more” this year while working in conjunction with YouTube.

The massive speculation that has been surrounding GoPro’s drone, dubbed “Karma” is that this will be the dividing feature between it and other multi-copters, such as industry dominating, DJI’s Phantom. No word on if that would be the case.

Tis the holiday season! And for those not quite sure which accessory to gift, “all of them” is often the answer in the form of simply buying a GoPro accessories bundle on Amazon. What is a bundle? A bundle is a grab bag of mounts, clips, 3m stickies, usually a chesty, head strap, grip, and much more.

But are they a good deal? Or is it just filled full of accessory crap that most GoPro users won’t need, or even worse, cheap accessories that will just fall apart after some moderate use?

To be 100% transparent, we don’t know. However, we encourage you to do your homework: Read the reviews and check to make sure that the company putting these bundles together is actually responding to customer inquiries and questions. We found three bundles that hold up to this test and have great ratings:

  1. The BlackPro “Basic Common Outdoor Sports Kit”. Includes 13 items. Currently, just $35.
  2. Baxia Technologies “Big Bundle”. Includes over 40 items. Currently, just $46.99.
  3. Soft Digits “50-in-1 Basic Common Outdoor Sports Kit Accessories”. Currently, just $39.99

Middle Fork of the Salmon guide, Skip Volpert, shared with us his tricks to capture the best angles while whitewater river guiding in Idaho.

“Everyone uses helmet mounts for their GoPro cameras. Those angles don’t look good because it’s too bouncy and jarring,” Volpert said. “The trick is to use a fixed point, either in the back of the raft looking forward, or at the front of the boat looking back.”

The other issue is guaranteeing that the camera will float in the event it gets knocked out of the raft. “That’s why I always mount it to a spare paddle. Not only does it float extremely well, but because the paddle’s blade is long and flat, I can easily lodge it into the raft so it doesn’t move around that much.”

Have a tip for mounting your GoPro camera to get the best shot? Email it to us and we’ll write about it.

Online marketplaces have been flooded with Chinese knock-off products the last two years. Their edge has been their price point, and their quality for the most part, sub-premium, especially compared to accessory makers such as HoStevie, and GoPole. However, AmazonBasics has a history of building decent and fair priced accessories, and if the product does fail, they often will ship a new one to the customer – free of charge.

As an insight into this website and blog, we’ve been in a pinch as to what to do: We have turned down nearly every email* from knock-off accessory manufacturers in hopes of A) giving the original innovators an edge and B) to not flood our own product pages with poorly built, churn and burn products. However, AmazonBasics is obviously building a good product, at a good price, and they’ve already swept the #1 best seller position. What we’ve decided is that from this point forward, we will include AmazonBasic products, but they will not enter the homepage featured list. This decision was based primarily on the fact that we want to support original accessory builders, but ultimately it comes down to our users and what they want.

*We receive over a dozen emails a day regarding this.

Dockalicious is a beautiful walnut charging dock for your GoPro camera. It integrates a USB plug into its base, so  you just slide your GoPro in and charge away. If style is important even at your desk, then this would make a great stocking stuffer for the upcoming holidays. And at $19.99, it won’t break the bank. Not bad for something handmade.

You can buy Dockalicious online here.

reddit-amaGoPro CEO Nick Woodman recently went live and did a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything). At its completion 1,316 comments were made with Nick answering 30 of them.

What was fascinating was the discussion regarding the long-rumored GoPro drone. One user asked “…What can you tell us about the drone plans?” to which Nick responded: “We’re so excited for our quad-copter…it’s a labor of love. I’ve been an RC nerd since I was a kid and my first business idea out of college was actually for a small live feed video camera that people could put into RC cars and planes so that they could control them from a first person perspective. After a couple of months of hacking at it, I totally failed at making that concept happen and I gave up. It’s cosmic to see that idea come full circle now with GoPro being the small camera that most people put in their RC vehicles! I guess it wasn’t such a bad idea after all. I cannot wait to see what people do with their GoPro quads…it’s going to be a childhood dream come true for me….”

In another comment he mentioned that “For starters, it’ll be developed by GoPro! Our baby has some serious passion behind it…as well as expectations. We understand you all expect us to kill it and that’s what we’re focused on…both for you and us. We are frothing for this to come out.”

What does this tell us? Well, not much in terms of specifics. We do know now that A) GoPro is very actively developing a quadcopter. B) They’re not buying out DJI or partnering up with them. C) Considering how excited he is for it, it will probably come out within the next 12 months.

Interestingly enough, in GoPros own “Top Ten Q&A” post regarding the AMA, they never disclosed the drone comments.

GoPro will award up to $5 million annually to user submitted content. Unlike typical “awards” or competitions, there is no submission deadline or date range. It’s whenever you shoot, capture, or edit something worthy, just submit it.

What they’re looking for: Basically, anything and everything. “Anything from cute moments with your kids to cooking, camping, surfing and snowball fights could be a contender for a GoPro Award. Amateur, professional or in between, we want to see it all.”

Submissions fall into three general categories, Photos, Raw Clips and Edits. Photos and Raw Clips must be original and unedited. Edits are complete video edits. Obviously, they are only taking content captured with a GoPro camera. The purses vary for each category, with photos bringing in $500, Raw Clips $1,000 and Edits a slick $5,000.

On top of this, users can submit their content within a plethora of award categories, such as “Best Trick Shot,” “Hidden Talents,” and many more.

On a final note, you should definitely read the terms: When a user submits their footage, they give GoPro a license to use their content. “You grant to GoPro and its licensees, successors and assigns a worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, fully paid-up, royalty-free, right and license, with the right to sublicense…For clarity, as part of the Licensed Uses, GoPro may use Your Content, in whole or in part or as part of the GoPro Materials without any further approval by You.” (The full terms can be read here.)

Ready to drop in? Check out the GoPro Awards here.

The HERO+ is a performance boost over the company’s other budget-conscious model, the GoPro HERO. Priced at an attractive $199.99, the camera is available for purchase on Sunday, October 4th, 2015.

The most attractive enhancement is full 1080 recording at 60 frames per second. The less expensive and older GoPro HERO captures at just 30 frames per second.

Nick Woodman, founder and CEO made this comment: “Even as we continue to raise the bar for our highest performing cameras like HERO4 Black, Silver and Session, we remain committed to developing simplified products like HERO+ that make GoPro life-capture accessible to everyone.”

Shares of GoPro (GPRO) plunged on the news and is trading down 4%.

For years, GoPro cameras and surfing have gone hand in hand. Compact, waterproof and simple to use, surfing enthusiasts have long enjoyed being able to easily capture their rides with a GoPro.

Comfortably fitting, the mouth mount allows hands free POV shots

Comfortably fitting, the mouth mount allows hands free POV shots

However, the accessories to help accomplish this have been limited. Slapping an M3 mount directly onto the board offers a cool “look back” angle, but it also means sticking something onto your surfboard which is like putting a bumper sticker on a nice car – just something you typically don’t want to do. It also flooded surfing films with the same generic shot, which made the angle stale and boring. Other angle options, such as using a GoPro handle, proved difficult due to the duel challenge of paddling while holding onto a grip.

Then came the HoStevie Mouth Mount. The mouth mount comfortably fits as a mouth piece allowing you to capture stable shots from a nearly perfect POV angle. On top of that, it also floats in the event you do completely eat it. While it’s also compact, the real kicker is it allows hands free operation, allowing you to do what you want to do: Capture epic barrels.

Nick Woodman, CEO and founder of GoPro, gave an interview to TechCrunch in which he mentioned that GoPro has been developing a cloud based media management system and editing software.

“GoPro has to build an iTunes type management system that just works with people…”

From TechCrunch: “As Woodman explained it, when a camera is plugged in to be charged, the service would upload the footage to a cloud service, eliminating the tiresome task of manually transferring the data from an SD card into editing software. From the cloud service, customers could edit the footage and share it.”

At the moment, there are only two serious cloud based video editors: WeVideo and YouTube. WeVideo offers the easiest editing platform, but offers little storage space, and their 1080 export option puts you in there highest tiered plan, at $20 / month. YouTube, on the other hand, offers unlimited storage, but has a somewhat clunky interface, finished videos are kept in the YouTube community, and have no built in option for exporting. YouTube is entirely free.

As more and more local machine based software has gone to the cloud (such as word processing, and image editing) video editing has been viewed as the next piece of software likely to go that direction. Bottlenecks outside of the actual software include bandwidth (uploading and downloading speed) and actual storage space (one minute of raw footage takes plenty of memory) which means having a decent platform will likely be expensive for both the provider (cloud storage) and the user (paying for decent internet speed). Interestingly, as storage space continues to get less and less expensive, the average video size per one minute of footage continues to increase, which means it will be a tough going to keep storage affordable.
